1st September '08 Scalby Mills-Scarborough

Scalby Beck

The site is around the point the Scalby Beck crosses the North Beach at Scarborough to join the North Sea. What we thought was unusual was the sight of herons scavenging at low tide. We always assumed they were fresh water birds. We see dozens of them on the Trent gravel pits.
This must have been one of the few times we got to get on the beach this year. The weather wasn't exactly a bucket and spade job though. Where the beck approaches the beach it is quite racey as it sweeps over plenty of gravel and steps. I was hoping we may catch sight of a Dipper or two. Its amazing how turnstone when viewed from only a few yards can then disappear in a single movement.

Curlew, Heron, GBBG, Common Tern, Redshank, Ringed Plover, Turnstone, Oyster Catcher.
