28th March '09 Filey Brigg and Dams

Very cold, very wet, very windy.

Filey Brigg
The information board in the carpark to the Dams.
I took the above picture of the information board because it had some birds on it which is more than could be said for the Dams! As you may imagine from the weather report it was a very fowl day, not in the birding sense you understand. In some hides you can stay reasenably comfortable from the elements and keep an eye on the bird activity with the shutters closed. However that is not the case at the Dams. The shutters are made of solid wood! Consequently staying in the hide is difficult when you may be only minutes away from a serious case of hyperthemia. Fortunately the birds have done the sensible thing for themselves and for us by hiding away somewhere a tadge warmer. So we can have a quick scan round, count the birds left that are toughing it out and be on our way.
The view from the main hide.
From the main hide to East Pool hide is only a matter of yards, but it is important to use the activity time to stimulate blood flow in order to maintain a degree of consciousnous. As well as the bitterly cold conditions it was obvious that the water levels were higher than we've ever seen them. This may also have had some impact on the bird presence.

Redshank, Teal, Pied Wagtail, Oyster Catcher, Shelduck, Herring Gull, Common Gull, Little Grebe, Reed Bunting, Dunnock, Pheasant.
