16th May '09 North Cave Wetlands

Cold, rain, breeze.

North Cave Wetlands

And you thought we just came for the birds!

Yes as promised, in full colour, one of Angelas specials, this is what we make a round trip of 120mls for. With that down your neck and the prospect of a Temminck's Stint, you couldn't start the day any better. We did three sites today so I'm not going to dwell too much. You've seen what you wanted anyway, but just hang on a bit while I tell you of our first sighting. Angela at the Wild Bird had told us it had been seen on the Village Pond. Fortunately Gary passed us before we set off and told us it was on Main Pond. I think Angela was sending us the long way round the site so that by the time we got back, cold, wet and hungry, she'd have got us qeueing up at the cafe again. We didn't fall for the ploy! As we approached the hide fellow birders were giving us more precise bearings. So it took only a minute or so to get a glimpse of our first Temminck's Stint. Its a fairly rare passage migrant, hence all the extra bodies with telescopes the size of a didgeredoo.

Village Pond from the middle hide.

Temminck's Stint, Avocet, Redshank, Ringed Plover, Common Gull, Oyster Catcher, Gadwall, Shellduck, Sedge Warbler, Lark, Meadow Pipit.
