12th June '09 Gotham Heritage Trail

Hot, sunny, slight breeze.

Gotham Heritage Trail.

View towards Gotham Wood.
This is a part of the countryside we should have visited before now. Its a continuation from the Clifton Pastures site that raises above Gotham village. From the other side of the Trent where we live, the woods that cover the hilltops, overllooks the valley. Its above these woods that Buzzards can be seen riding the thermals. And its from seeing them I've wanted to get closer to their territory. And the first sighting was a lone Buzzard drifting eastwards down the Trent valley. This was quickly followed by another predator, a Kestrel heading in the opposite direction.
Sign of the Wheldon Spring.
I began the trail from the stables just before entering Gotham. Parking is in a secure cul-de-sac.
Having hacked my way to the stile the rest of the route took me to a high point giving good views back towards Clifton and beyond. After the Wheldon Spring visit, views open up to the north for 20miles or more taking in Cromford Moor and Abrahams Heights. A walk through the wood did not reveal anything remotely birdlike until near the exit when a Chaffinch went out of its way to make itself noticed. I tried to ignore it. I had lunch overlooking a patch of scrub I thought looked interesting. It payed off when a Whitethroat appeared. Although the sightings weren't anything to write home about, the afternoon was delightful.
Radcliffe Power Station.
