27th December '08 Clifton Pasture

Very cold, windy cloud.

Clifton Pasture

We had read on a web report of Corn Buntings, Meadow Pipit sightings on the pasture so had to check it out. To think we'd lived on the estate for years and not even heard of the place! Its a bit awkward finding somewhere to park. We found a place on one of the side streets, but I would recommend the small layby at the Gotham end of the Pasture. It is unbelievably muddy underfoot, especially the last field before reaching the layby. Anyway we didn't see any Buntings but made up for it with the Yellowhammers. These were seen in a little oasis, consisting of a small copse surrounding a small pond. We would never have known a pond was there if Margarets radar tabs hadn't picked up the quaking of a Mallard. The whole oasis is surrounded by a screen of trees, and where the opening is, a manicured area of grass. Obviously a local farmer must tend it with great care.

Buzzard, Yellowhammer, Dunnock, Stonechat, Grey Partridge, Usual.
