View from Delta Hide

I had a couple of hours to spare so I popped down to the hide to try and get a picture of the Bittern before it disappears during the breeding seasen. It was not to be and there can't be more than a couple of weeks before it packs its bags and leaves to go a wooing. My couple of hours were nearly up so I left. I must add, I'd missed seeing a Merlin that Al had spotted. I was looking for it above the treetops when it was skimming a foot above the water! Anyway before leaving the reserve I decided to have a look down a small path leading to the last pond. What a break that turned out to be. On a small islet I noticed some activity. At first I thought it was Siskin, then Goldfinch until I realised I had my first sighting ever of Lesser Redpoll. A small group were in an Alder. Below is a photo taken from about 30yds with my limited 200mm.

Lesser Redpoll female.

I never thought I'd see one of these before winter draws out. That made my day for sure.

LESSER REDPOLL*, Pochard, Chaffinch, LTT.
