22d March '09 Netherfield Lagoons

Cold, overcast, windy.

Netherfield Lagoons

Stream alongside the lagoons to the right.
Before we set out the weather seemed quite pleasant, nevertheless we know full well anywhere in the Trent valley the wind can be something else. So with thick jumpers and coats we weren't going to be caught out. And well we would have been. The wind roaring along the top of the pits was bitter. For a change we decided to continue along the side of the small stream that winds its way to the Trent. I particularly wanted to look at the lagoons alongside the river and its surrounding scrubland. No sooner had we gone beyond the bridge did we spot a Green Woodpecker and then in the small scrubby trees a warbler. Eventually the main lagoon was reached. Normally we only see this from the height of Large Pit, down here it looks huge.
Deep Pit, the first lagoon.
There was very little to mention of on any of the pits. The Little Grebe as ever was doing his stuff and that was about it. Then, only the final yards before getting back to the car, a Grey Wagtail appearred from nowhere. I was only yards away and just managed to snap it before it fled.
Large Pit, in the distance can be seen the reedbeds of Deep Pit.

Chaffinch, Chiffchaff, Green Woodpecker, Reed Bunting, Lapwing, Greylag, Little Grebe, Grey Wagtail.
