Forge Valley Woods
The River Derwent from the boardwalk.
From the Old Mans Mouth carpark to the boardwalk is but a couple of strides. There is a feeding station just a little upstream so all around is plenty of bird activity. The last time we ventured here we took the path down river. This time we went upriver following the Derwent till the path turns back on itself and upwards forming a nice circular walk first along the valley floor then half way up skirting the treeline.
The boardwalk.
Once the boardwalk is left behind the waymarking of our path became totally confusing. We appeared to have been diverted onto the Geological Trail. Having retraced our path the rest of the route was completed without incidence. The return at the higher level afforded excellent views across the vale and although lacking in sightings was thoroughly enjoyable.
Grey Wagtail, Nuthatch, Chiffchaff, Common Buzzard, Grey Herons, Meadow Pipit, Wren, Blackcap.
