Londesborough.
Looking towards Londesborough Hall.
Just a short diversion off the A614 brings you to the delightful village of Londesborough. There is easy parking outside the church where an information board is located, giving the local history, and the layout of suitable footpaths. The route we are taking is part of the Wolds Way as it crosses the undulating parkland of lakes, cascades and woods.
The Lake. This is Strictly Private as opposed to being just Private!
Apparently the estate was created by the Earl of Burlington. He must have owned all of Yorkshire! Primarily the place was developed for hunting, and archways not far from the old terrace was provided for the comfort of deer, so its believed. Presumably to keep them in fine fettle before hunting them down. It wasn't deer we were hunting but our avian friends. The parkland, lakes and woods appeared to be occupied by two birds. A Greylag and a Shelduck.
Nevertheless we loved everything about it, and like King James II when he came to Londesborough, thought it was 'paradise on Earth'.
One of the many ancient trees within the parkland.
Greylag, Shelduck.
