Warm, showers, windy.
Kiplingcotes Chalk Pit.
This is another one of those gems, for us anyway, that is just a short diversion from our main route. This is a once derelict chalk quarry, now courtesy of the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, a beautiful oasis, on the outskirts of Market Weighton. The quarry was established eons ago when railways were needed in these parts. Now the only evidence remaining, is the footpath which serves the Wolds way on its way eastwards. The quarry of course has been revived to what it is today and is designated a place of scientific interest particularly from a botanical point of view.
There is a small carpark adjacent to the path, and, on entering, before we had time to boot-up, had spotted a Yellowhammer, and a Buzzard over the ridge that runs alongside this part of the trail. The trail takes you to the quarry about 300yds east. Note that dogs are not allowed. Although I don't think this rule applies to some of the locals! We saw one old chap walking aimlessly along the quarry floor, this being especially in need of protection, with his two dogs roaming loose to do as they pleased. To be fair your honour, the signposting on the point of entry to the reserve is totally inadequate. There is a one line statement at the bottom of the information board in lettering about 5mm high suggesting no dogs allowed. I doubt if some of them have even noticed the notice. Getting back to the site, after the defendant was found 'not guilty', a figure of eight trod covers it all, with the first loop taking in the top half, where upon at its very height is a perfectly placed seat, dedicated to Jock. From here there are wonderful views up and down the valley. Pity I can't take any pictures. The return on this route is along the very edge of the quarry top giving an allround view of the quarry floor back on which, the final loop can be completed to the accompaniment of 'a little bit of bread and no cheeeeeese'.
