31st July '09 Sprotbrough Flash

Warm, suuny, windy.

Sprotbrough Flash.

View from one of the hides of the flash.
I've done it again. You may ask how the hell do I do it? The truth is I don't know. Perhaps I was born with the gift. Anyway while I can still pull it off, I'll ride my luck. Yes, its another one of those beauties off the M18, our usual route up north, thats no further than you can throw a stick. Amazingly not a mile from this spot are two motorways. Even nearer is a small town. And with the constant sounds resembling rapid small arms firing, is the Dolomite Quarry works just beyond the bluff that confines the River Don. The setting is truly beautiful. The riverside walk, the flash itself as seen from the very smart hides, the walk through the woods, and the views across the Don to the cliffs beyond, remnants of earlier quarry workings. And if you're reading this one George, a grand stone built pub, presunably from stone quarried across the river. The Boat Inn awaits your custom on return.
Looking back on the entrance to the wood from the riverside.
There are three lovely open hides with seats in well placed locations covering the entire length of the flash. Today there wasn't a lot to see birdwise, but the weather and scenary more than makes up for it, and after a while its of little consequence. Half way along the woodland walk a gap in the scrub opens into the cornfield and a seat is conviently placed. Beautiful views over the valley are displayed before you. This is the perfect place for lunch. And it must be said that the seat is dedicated to Jim, who obviously, like us, enjoyed this spot.
