6th August '09 Cotgrave Country Park

Hot, sunny, still.

Cotgrave Country Park.
The fish pond.
Yet another example of fine restoration work on another one of the counties colliery sites. Being our first visit we weren't too sure on where to go to park and ended up on the access road adjacent to the sports ground. An impressive entrance welcomes all to the park. There being no information board with maps of the trails and things to see, we took the first fork left. We were led unknowingly into a private development site. Having found our bearings we were able to rejoin the park after scaling a wire fence near to the fish pond. We were faced with another dilemma. Another fork in the path. You just know in places like this that you will be doing a lot of backtracking. I cannot believe that considering the millions spent developing the place, a proper vandal proof set of information boards and wayward signs for different trails couldn't have been provided.
Lockgates at the Grantham Canal.
It was a very humid day and not being used to such unseasonal sunshine we had to make a decision at one point on our trek wether to continue, and then find we were miles from our starting point, or turn back. We had decided earlier to do this on part of the canal walk, which proved to have been the right thing to have done. Now I thought that the route we were on may be circumnavigating the main spoil heap that dominates the park. Our spirits flagging in the heat, were revived temporarily by the appearance of a flock of Willow Warblers and Long Tailed Tits. Up till that point our only sighting of note was watching with fascination a lone Buzzard swooping low over the fish pond. Luckily our judgement was correct and it was with some relieve, as thunder bellowed across from Plumtree, we found ourselves back at our starting point. The walks are well paved taking in lots of variations in landscapes including wetlands, ponds, woodland and open space, and throughout offering fine sceanry.
Yes, its the power station.
Buzzard, Chaffinch, Swallows, Willow Warbler, Long Tailed Tit.
