10th September '09 Cley Marsh

Warm, sunny, windy.

Cley Marsh

Simmonds Scrape

Having found a good route from base camp bypassing Cromer, here we are again at Cley Marshes. It is advisable to get as much information as possible from the visitor centre for what is likely to be seen and where. When you get your little map write this information on the map. If you're like me all that information has gone before I've made the boardwalk. The good thing I've noticed about this place is that whatever sightings are on the board, so far at least, we've always seen them. And today we had the prospect of 4 first sightings awaiting us.

Beautiful. Looking towards Arnolds Marsh.

When you look at the size of the place and one of those firsts is a Little Stint, a bird no bigger than a blue tit, then you get some idea of the task before you. We've learnt over the past year that in order to get these sightings its important not only to keep a good eye out but to keep your ears twigged, particularly when in the hide. You'll be surprised what imformation can be gleamed by earwigging what the couple at the far end of the hide are whispering to each other. We got 2 of our first sightings on Pats Pool. There was'nt any need for snooping here as most of the fellow birders were only too happy to share their knowledge. And thats how it should be.
All in all we had some great firsts, met some lovely people, saw some remarkable scenary and the weather was great.
Looking along the shingle towards Cromer.
