January 29th '10 Bennerley Marsh

Very cold, mainly sunny, windy.

Bennerley Marsh.

View along the viaduct.

I parked up near the dog kennels and headed for the viaduct looking for a route, in order to cross it. As you can see from the picture above I achieved my objective. The view was well worth the effort. However I still drew a blank as far as Snipe sightings went. I later turned my attentions to the marshes alongside the Erewash near Winchat Corner. I swept the marsh before me covering it in a gridlike fashion in order not to miss anything. The whole marsh revealed two Common Snipe. I was very tired but very happy that I'd seen them. Almost every sightings report for this marsh brings up both Snipe and Jack Snipe and yet I always drew a blank, where were the little varmints I asked myself. Now at last my mission is almost complete, well almost. There's still the Jack Snipe to consider. Oh, and the Shorteared Owl!

A view through the viaduct railings to the Erewash below.

Common Snipe, Green Woodpecker, Wren, Bullfinch, Lapwing.
