January 28th '10 Attenborough Nature Reserve

Cold, some drizzle, windy.

Attenborough Nature Reserve

Kingfisher Hide from the new hide.

George, my brother-in-law, has been getting a bit of stick lately. Why! He hasn't seen a Bittern. So being the obliging chap that I am, I immediately legged it to the reserve in order to sus out where, when and how frequently the local Bitterns here can be observed, so that I could then bring George here to meet them for a photo session. Since the bad weather at least three birds are still regularly seen from the new hide. I confirmed this with early sightings, the first after only a few minutes in the hide, the second after only a few minutes after leaving it. A further bonus was a first sighting for me of Smews,. Four drakes sticking very closely together and always at a distance. It was only after tracking them for at least an hour or more that I finally got near enough to get a nice view within my goggles. What a lovely bird they are. Find out later if George gets to see his Bitterns.

Thats one of the Bitterns.

SMEW*, Bittern, Goosander, Pochard, Goldeneye, Bullfinch.
