Wilford Claypit SSSI.
Overlooking the site from the Apple Tree carpark.
The site is only a short distance from the Wilwell Cuttings site. Being a source of rich clays for a local brickmaker many years ago, perhaps the clay was transported by the railway. We parked in the Apple Tree carpark the back of which overlooks the reserve. In the picture above you can make out the Nottingham Council House and many other landmarks. The site is nothing like I imagined it would be. Apart from the odd outcrops of clay deposits it is unrecognisable as a quarry, such is the magnificent job that has been done to provide such a diversity of habitat. There is open water, marsh, grassland, scrub and mature trees. And surprisingly for a site surrounded by housing and industry not a sign of dog litter!
A viewing platform to watch the frogs making babies.
Green Woodpecker, Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Blue, Great and Longtailed Tits.
