19th June '10 Sculthorpe Moor NR.

Less cold, less wet, less wind

Sculthorpe Moor Community Nature Reserve.

A peaceful scene after the storms of the Wash.

We travelled not a dozen miles inland and it was almost like Spring here. Not bad considering its two days short of mid-summers day! Anyway, this is a lovely site with excellent paths and boardwalks, beautiful scenary and a richness of wildlife. What more do you want. There is a small donation for entry at certain times of the year. How they provide the facilities and resources on this is a mystery. Full credit must go to the Hawk and Owl Trust whch created and manages the reserve, not forgetting the army of volunteers who give their time. What I love about the place is its diversity of habitats in such a compact area which can be covered in a gentle stroll. In one hide there is a video cam of a Marsh Harriers nest. We counted five chicks, all at varying stages of development, from almost fledgling to a downy covered ball. So once we'd thawed out we thoroughly enjoyed a wonderful, relaxing stroll

The Marsh Harriers breed in this type of habitat.

Marsh Harrier, Sedge, Reed Warbler, Reed Bunting, Whitethroat.
