28th July '10 Budby Common

Mild, overcast, cool north-westerly.

Budby Common

Looking across the common to Sherwood Forest.

This is our first visit to the common having been inspired by the recorded sightings of a few, for us, 'firsts'. We parked on the A616 just before Budby village at a sign for a bridal path. A couple of plods from which the common opens out before you. A rolling landscape covered in birch, pines and oak with plenty of heather and ferns on the ground. We were surprised by the lack of visitors to the area, not that we were complaining mind. With the exception of a single dog walker the only other dwellers on the heath were a handful of goats. To be honest we weren't really expecting to see a deal yet within a few minutes we'd recorded our first Woodlark. I couldn't identify it while standing beneath the tree it was calling from because of the terrible light. But the obvious crest and black and white wing patch nailed it. We only covered a small corner of the common with the view to completing the rest on future visits. This will be a great place to come back to in the spring with possibly a night visit for the nightjars. Oh and if you're not convinced, there wasn't a dog turd or piece of litter to be trod on or seen.

Apparently the heath gones on for miles.
