Old Moor Nature Reserve.
I think thats Rotherham in the background.
This is another reserve in the Dearne Valley, once again partly created by mining subsidence particularlly Wrath Ings and the field pools. The reserve is an RSPB site and it shows. The site caters for all the comforts of everyone, wether birding, taking a stroll or maybe a picnic. As it says on the brochure this is indeed a jewel in the crown of South Yorkshire. You realise this the moment you pull into the packed carpark. And when you see the groups of families enjoying themselves. If you plan it right you could have a brilliant day here. There are two trails that between them cover the site. The red route is the longest and includes five hides. I would do this first then on returning to the centre either have lunch at the cafe or picnic on the tables provided. Having been suitabley fortified, finish the other trail, which has two hides. We look forward to a return visit perhaps for the autumn passage. Oh, I nearly forgot, and we had a first here to cap it all! Mediterranean Gulls, with the first breeding pairs recorded in Yorkshire!
Hairy Highland cattle at Wader Scrape.
Mediterranean Gull*, Oyster Catcher, Green Sandpiper, Green and Redshank, Blacktailed Godwit, Little and Ringed Plover, Common Tern, Bullfinch, Linnet, Coaltit.
