Clifton Pastures/Grove/Barton-in-Fabis
Clifton Grove taken from upriver after the weir.
This turned out to be a great day. We parked in the small estate at the bottom of the Grove. Within a minute we'd seen Goldcrest and Chaffinch in the twitchel leading down to the river. Not long after, in mid-river were Goldeneye and in low branches overhanging the river we saw a Kingfisher. Another hundred yards up river we saw another! We followed the river heading towards the weir. Before we had reached it we spoke to two fellow birders from Alfreton and while talking I noticed a Tree Creeper behind them. They told us of a reserve on their patch that sounds well worth a visit. You meet some very nice people out birding. Before reaching the weir we turned left skirting the manure heap along a track that seperated one field in grass and the other with early arable growth. It was a delight to hear the calls and songs of Skylarks once again.
As we approached the flash our attention was drawn to activity above. Two Buzzards were being harassed. One by Gulls and the other by a Crow. The flash revealed several Snipe.
Holme Pit Mute Swans.
The Water Rail didn't show at the Pit, the way things were going I was expecting to see a pair breeding! That was about it and nothing else showed up not even my lens cover which I'd lost somewhere along the bottom of the Grove. So if you find one along that route its mine.
Goldcrest, Chaffinch, Goldeneye, Kingfisher, Tree Creeper, Sky Lark, Buzzard, Snipe, Kestrel, LTT.
