23rd February '09 Clifton Pastures/Grove/Barton-in-Fabis

Cold, sunny, breezy.

Barton Flash

After the previous visit here I couldn't wait to get back. I was determined to get the Snipe on film so I approached the flash like a Red Indian scout. With my camera set up and ready to snap, the nearer I got the faster my heart rate became. Now I know why they call them Twichers. I was twiching like crazy. The tension was unbearable as I stepped into the flash. I barely disturbed a blade of grass as I edged forward a millimetre at a time. If anything was flushed now I'd have died of fright. Somebody must have warned them I was coming! I went around the flash and it was deserted! I took a photo of the flash thinking I could check it out again on the PC in zoom mode in case anything was hiding from me. With not having a lot of time I headed back via the ponds. As I crossed the set-aside field I flushed out a couple of Reed Buntings.

Barton Pond.

I saw more Reed Buntings at the ponds and a Buzzard heading towards Branshill Wood. Back at the car there were more Buntings on the spoil heap at the water board works pull-in,

Buzzard, Reed Bunting, Lapwing.
