Bennerley Marsh
This is a stretch of the Nottingham Canal that I had not done, from Cossall to Awsworth and Bennerley Marsh. And what a delightful little walk it proved to be. You can see from the photos what awaits the visitor. Sometimes canal walks can be monotous, this was anything but. With it skirting modestly high hills it affords good views along the entire route. Add to that the odd pine plantation and scrubby hillock and you've hit the jackpot. I took in the plantation which required a treachorous climb after the previous nights rain. But was rewarded with wonderful views towards the Derbyshire dales. My objective was the wet pastures before the viaduct. I got as close as I could to the Erewash to afford the best possible view of the bird population. I was hoping to see Golden Plover and Snipe. I saw neither, but there were plenty of Lapwing, Wigeon and Teal. I made my way back clutching my stomach. I knew I'd overdone it climbing that hill!
Chaffinch, Wren, Mistlethrush, Meadow Pipit, Fieldfare, Kestrel, Wigeon, Teal.
