1st August '09 Filey Dams

Cold, wet, windy.

Filey Dams

Its the middle of summer would you believe?

It was more like a day in late March than the beginning of August. But when you don't see the birds and the scenary compensates, well sometimes the birds can sometimes do the compensating. The water levels having been lowered has certainly attracted the waders. Where we usually do the two hides then leave, we went back for seconds on this occassion. Plovers had been sighted beyond the scope of our goggles to distinguish wether Little Ringed or just Ringed Plover. We had an interesting time amongst the rest of the birders, coming to a decision. We finally decided on my assumption that they were Ringed. This was then thrown into doubt again when another birder entered resembling one of the authors in the RSPB magazine, and asked us if we'd seen the LRP's! In cases like this where I cannot be sure of the identity I would usually not enter anything. But here I would state Ringed Plover to cover the species not the bird. Perhaps this is wrong, but I think so long as there is a reference that it wasn't positively identified as one or the other then the information is of some use.

We had ringside seats at the bullring.

Green Sandpiper, Common Sandpiper, Greenshank, Ruff, Dunlin, Ringed Plover, Barn Owl.
