2nd August '09 North Cave Wetlands

Cold, cloudy, windy

North Cave.

From Turret Hide looking across the maize field.

With the Avocets gone and most of the young birds no longer looking so cute its fairly quiet at the moment. And with the lakes being well below ground level there is very little that can be done to contol the water levels in order to provide the right conditions for waders and the like. However we did manage to spot some Common Sandpiper and a Redshank, the latter of which had even eluded Gary, and a solitary Common Tern which is the first we've ever seen here. Its at times like these when interests needs to be widened, for instance we are now taking more notice of butterflies and moths. And it was along the Black Dyke that we spotted some lovely specimens of Painted Lady, Peacock, Comma and Little Tortoiseshell.

One of the draggonfly ponds. The lillies are beautiful.

Common Sandpiper, Common Tern, Redshank.
