8th September '09 Hickling Broad

Hot, sunny, windy

Hickling Broad.

A Little Egret.

It wasn't until we drove the last few yards towards the car-park here, that it dawned on me we were here last year! This is the largest of the broads and is managed by the NWT. There are four hides and most of the paths between them is boardwalk. I must admit I was expecting great things here. From the first hide Cadbury, I think we saw the total sightings of our visit. Although we started off in low cloud and a cool wind the day got hotter and by the time we were on the last lap we were nearly on our last legs. It was on this last stretch where a dyke leads into the broad proper that I thought I could see a crane, too far in my goggles to be certain. By this time the others had walked well ahead. I gestured with them to return hoping they would be glad I had called them back for such a sighting. I don't think they were too happy and it didn't help when in the end I convinced myself it was a heron. We wouldn't have any of this if we had a scope.

This is the largest expanse of broad in Norfolk.

Marsh Harrier, Little Egret, Greenshank, Green Sandpiper.
