9th November '09 Rufford Abbey CP

Cool, sunny, breeze.

Rufford Abbey CP.

The remains of the medieval Abbey.

The Monastery was first built in the 12th century and after its dissolution in the 16th century, after falling into decline, became a country estate to various earls. Now it is managed and run, extremely well, by Nottingham Council. 150 acres remains of the estate that is accessible to the public, of what was once a large chunk of the 'Dukeries' consisting of many thousands of acres. What remains are the historic parkland, lovely gardens, woodlands and a well landscaped lake. The buildings that remain have been excellently refurbished and the surrounding gardens and parkland very well maintained. So much so that as your gentle stroll takes you around, it is very hard to focus your attention on looking for signs of birdlife. There can't be many places we've been to that have not warranted some critisism of a sort but this place is nearly one of them. How you may ask can you come up with something on this little jewel? Just the one gripe I promise. During the school holidays is not the time to hike up parking charges. Children should be encouraged from an early age to learn about their history and I'm sure the earlier and more often they visit these places the more likely they will continue in later life.
Part of the lovely gardens.

Willow Tit, Tree Creeper, Nuthatch, Green Woodpecker.
