Bennerley Marsh.
The River Erewash winding its way across Bennerley Marsh.
For the past week or two now I have been reading reports of regular sightings of a Short Eared Owl on the marsh. Well we couldn't put it off any longer so here we are. But unfortunately the owl wasn't! We had barely stepped onto the marsh proper when sat in a tree not 20yards away was a juvenile Peregrine Falcon! Do you know I'm not sure if I have seen one before, the other Little Dickie Bird certainly hasn't. I think this was some divine arrangement to compensate for not seeing the owl later. The marsh itself showed the usual Lapwings and gulls and during our walk these were spooked at regular intervals by the Peregrine. We came across it on our return, it was perched on the railings of the viaduct and was in full sunlight, but cleared off before I could get my camera on it. Like the power station dominates the skyline at Attenborough so the viaduct dominates the entire marsh and beyond. Our only other sightings of note were of a Greaterspotted and a Green Woodpecker. As for the owl, well as Rambo always said, 'we'll be back'.
Peregrine Falcon*, Greater Spotted Woodpecker, Green Woodpecker, Lapwing, Grey Heron, Goldfinch, Redwing.
