Erewash Meadow Nature Reserve (South Section).
Looking south over the marsh.
After a disappointing visit to Bennerley Marsh I thought I would try my luck further north up the Erewash. So having parked on Stoney Lane near the last of the dwellings I headed under the A610 and into the southern section of Erewash Marsh. Although cold it was a beautiful day. With the sun almost behind me I decided to do a clockwise circular. This was a mistake. The first stretch alongside the railway brings you to a nice sighting screen with good views across the marsh. After having lunch on the bridge over the Erewash I headed south and where the path takes you into the fields the ground becomes very sticky all the way till Stoney Lane is reached. I'd seen very little to this point and my last chance of anything was along the lane itself where it passed over the river. I had Water Rail in mind but unfortunately not in sight. Still it is a very tidy bit of wetland and well worth a visit. Perhaps when the ponds are not frozen over there might be more to see.
The railway line is behind the first line of shrubs.
Wigeon, Shoveler, Teal, Lapwing, Snipe, Mistlethrush.
