Denaby Ings.
The Ing, an old Norse word for a wet and marshy land, was formed by mining subsidence around the River Dearne. The river having been diverted along the other side of the embarkment that contains the Ing. This embankment was needed to transport coal away from the area. When we pulled into the carpark it looked as if we would be seeing a few people around the reserve. It appears that they had all taken their pooches on the pathways along the River Dearne itself. If you have the time this is worth checking out. Anyway we had a lovely relaxing stroll around the reserve and enjoyed watching the Barn Owl owlets taking their first look at the outside world from their home in a conveniently placed nest box.
Barn Owl, Chiffchaff, Kingfisher, Heron, Yellowhammer, Garden Warbler, Goldfinch, Great Crested Grebe, Wren.
